Jane refers to her work as ‘mapping wholeness’, using story and mixed media to visualize our journey of connection with self, God, community and surroundings.
For her MA, Jane began her process of mapping wholeness, through visualising experiential stories of living with multiple cultural identities – janehdee.com/projects. Currently Jane continues the mapping wholeness process through a series of portraits (working title, Reclaimed) of lives reclaimed through faith. Painting boards are constructed from reclaimed wood, and prepared using stylised yakisugi burning & sealing, making the wood strong & resilient against fire, water & infestation. Reclaimed out of a violent gang background, Ryan embodies the background yakisugi work, as he partners with God’s refining & healing process – janehdee.com/portraits.
Alongside the Reclaimed portrait series, Jane continues to explore cultural fusion through the construction of a wearable-art collection entitled, Cowal Kimono – janehdee.com/lighting. Inspired by the dramatic seasonal colours of Scotland’s Cowal Peninsular, and the fact that traditional kimonos surface design is based on the four seasons, this 4-piece collection weaves together a rich symbiotic identity story of roots, belonging, journeying and displacement, with the idea of being from more than one place.
